We are not a online Pop-Up store or have an occasional Kiosk in a mall. We have been an online retail Toy Store for over 8 years and will continue that strategy.

We receive calls daily asking if we were the one selling at such and such mall kiosk or at some festival...to their disappointment, we inform them that we sell online only. During the conversation they usually refer the Skitter Car in the many names of the off brand type ride on cars that appear to look like the Skitter Car but we know that they do not perform as good, made of the same high quality materials in addition the pop-up kiosk attempting to sell is just looking to make a quick buck (here today gone tomorrow business model).

In a recent 20/20 report (November 11, 2010) revealed questionable business practices within the Better Business Bureau. We have been asked by some customers if we are a member and are rating. We have declined to be part of the BBB and other rating organizations because of the reasons listed by 20/20 and more.

According to the report, Brian Ross reports, the BBB is under fire, accused of using bad ratings and the promise of improved ratings to sell memberships. “20/20” watches as business owners with C grades say they were told they could improve their rating by paying $425 for a membership in the BBB and then watch as the business’s score goes up to an A+ in one business day. Be careful on websites etc of what companies post as to their approval ratings and what logos that are placed on the site. Most, if not all, can be bought.

Skitter Car works in Phsyical Therapy with Special Needs Child

Clara-Bear does not have a lot of options for ride on toys that she can use independently. She reached the point where she was strong enough to move a toy along with her feet at the same time that she hit a growth spurt. She is too weak for the ride on toys designed for pre-schoolers but too tall for the more lightweight infant ride ons. Hard to believe that a five year old who's still wearing a size 3T pant is too tall for a ride on toy.

This is part of the reason I am so excited by our Skitter Car. What started out as a way to get Clara-Bear moving on her own while she is gaining strength and coordination has become a regular part of her Physical Therapy. The Skitter is helping Clara-Bear gain strength and progress towards using a riding toy without needing assistance.

The Skitter Car is a little different than most ride on toys. The feet are extended out in front of the rider and the arms do all the work. The rider moves his arms side to side by swinging the elbows back and forth, and this magically makes the Skitter go. The Skitter requires less balance and less coordination than a traditional bicycle. It sits low to the ground and is lightweight.

Frustrated kids can learn through Play

The email began, "My 8 year old son has not learned how to ride a bike yet. Is this really bad? I feel guilty that at this age he doesn't know how to ride." The email was sent to Parentdish asking for advice.

"He gets frustrated very easily, and I tried on various occasions last summer to teach him only to have him 'give up' within the first 10 minutes. I didn't want to push him so I just let it go." The letter mentioned a few other important points: 1) The same issue had arisen when Mom bought her son a skateboard (frustration followed by quitting), and 2) her son is otherwise healthy and active, he enjoys a few sports and loves playing outside. "Am I worrying over nothing?" she asks at the end.

The response from Parentdish writer Sabrina Weill offered ideas on how a mom can encourage a child who is frustrated and feels like giving up:

Break tasks into tiny pieces.

Set your child up for success.

Talk about mistakes as a good thing.

Know when to push.

Catch frustration early.

Get help.

We also want to add that building success begins early with kids through structured and un-structured play. Play is about having fun while learning new skills and task. Play also develops children's fine and gross motor skills building confidence in the child. Confidence is the building block to future success.

One of the many benefits of the Skitter ride on toy is that most any child can quickly gain the skills to ride it. As seen here by a two year old that just received her Skitter. The ride on toy (Skitter) is used in many Children's Hospitals because it is safe and develops kid's physical skills resulting in gaining confdence while having fun.

You just spent your hard earned money on beautiful wood floors when you start to notice scratches, scuffs and even chips in the floor. You yell at the dog, the husband and finally the kids. The Ellen DeGeneres Show

What a week this was!!!! It started by receiving a call from the Ellen Degeneres show that they need some Blue (Ellen's color) Skitters for the show. The Skitters were used as part of a Games Week contest where contestants had to push hired "Hunks" on them. The show aired on Wednesday, February 17.

Skitter Toys was invited down the day before filming for rehearsals. The producers were really excited that they were able to use the Skitter ride on toy for filming and have heard all about how much fun they are from kids of their staff. During rehearsal everybody wanted to ride the Skitters which demonstrated how durable they are constructed. The producers were concerned about not damaging the stage wood flooring but were pleased when they found out about the Skitter Toys upgraded polyurethane wheels that do not damage flooring.

The next day was the filming for the show which again we were invited back to attend and to hang out behind the scenes. Before we arrived we received a call from the producers that Ellen just loved the toys and said that they were the best toy she has scene. With that said, she had to get some for the kids in her family.

The filming went perfect with the live audience screaming during the ride on toy game segment and become an Ellen favorite video clip on Ellen's website. We had the royal treatment from the staff and crew who were more than gracious. We have took many pictures and were told by the producers that they will be using them again for future Ellen DeGeneres shows.

Stroller Recall

Once again another stroller recall is in the news. This time it is CYBEX umbrella strollers sold by Regal Lager were recalled in the U.S. and Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada announced. The stroller has been recalled out of concern its hinges could break or sever a child's fingers.

This is the third stroller recall in recent months. About 1 million of the popular Maclaren strollers were recalled in November after a dozen reports of children having their fingertips severed in the hinge mechanism. And last week, Graco recalled 1.5 million of their strollers after five children suffered fingertip amputations in the hinges on the strollers' canopies.

Regal Lager said it sold about 1,100 of its Chinese-made strollers in the U.S. and 90 in Canada. The models being recalled are Ruby, Onyx and Topaz. They were sold from August-November 2009 for $140-$260. Those who have the strollers are asked to stop using them and request a hinge cover retrofit kit from Regal Lager. Regal Lager can be reached weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Eastern at (800) 593-5522. The kits also can be ordered through Regal Lager's Web site or by email at info@regallager.com.

SUV crashes into Day Care Center

As a parent my number one fear is my children ever getting hurt especially when I am not there to comfort them. Every time I hear of a story like this my heart skips a beat. Thankfully no children or adults were killed in this accident.

McClaren Stroller pose injury risk to Children

Major stroller maker Maclaren expects to recall 1 million umbrella strollers on Tuesday, due to a potential finger hazard for children. A side hinge mechanism poses a hazard to children's fingerss when the umbrella stroller is being opened or closed, the company says.

Maclaren, one of the leading stroller makers, is making the voluntary recall after reports of 12 injuries, according to a report in the New York Daily News. All Maclaren strollers sold since 1999 are included in the recall, the newspaper reported.

The company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is providing consumers and retailers free repair kits which will cover a joint on the umbrella stroller's hinge mechanism.

Maclaren is recalling its umbrella strollers because of a side hinge that can cause injury to children's fingers.

A special note about the review was that the 2 1/2 year old Potamus boy has difficulty with his balance. SkitterToys Review Part 1

Today's review is for a yellow Skitter Car from Skitter Toys! (arv $55.95)

We have had quite awhile to thoroughly test out the Skitter Car; it's quality, it's durability, it's ease of use, and of course, it's fun factor. We also got the chance to review it with it's regular wheels, and then the upgraded wheels. This review is for the regular wheels, and soon I will have the review up for the upgraded wheels. (That one will include a video!)

I honestly can't tell you how fun this little car is. Not only does Calvin love it, but Aaron and I love it, and our friends and family love it as well. (Everytime our friends come over they have to ride it around, lol) I was very surprised to see that it was able to hold the weight of my husband, as well as our guy friends that are all over the weight limit. (The weight limit on it is 150lbs.) I wanted to really test out it's durability, and it more than passed the test. They were able to ride around on it with the same ease that I was.

It's very simple to use, just sit, put your feet up on the feet pads, and steer the wheel. It doesn't take long to learn how to move the wheel in order to move forward and to turn. It definitely moves easier on smooth surfaces, like wood or tiled floors. Moving you forward like you're on a slanted surface, even though you aren't. And takes a little more work in parking lots and other places with rough surfaces.

Calvin is too young to really undestand how to use the wheel, so as you can see, he scoots with his feet. But he doesn't mind at all. He absolutely adores his car, and even though he also has a smaller car that fits him better; he prefers to use the Skitter Car, and have us use his tiny car, lol.

So after a couple months of using it non-stop, and testing weight limits, different surfaces, etc; I can definitely vouch for the fact that the Skitter Car is durable, fun, and worth every penny. Christmas is coming up soon, and I think this would be an awesome present for your kids. Who wouldn't love this? (Heck, we use it just as much as Calvin does! It's a great toy for the whole family) And for the price, you really can't beat it. I highly recommend it; if I didn't have one already, and knew what I knew about it, I would buy it in a second.

Federal Trade Commission new Guidelines

The Federal Trade Commission just announced their new guidelines for "Product Endorsements". These guidelines will have an immediate impact on advertisers, marketing agencies and individual endorsers like celebrities and mom bloggers. Why, because they truth must be told about what type of payment, if any was received and what product was given free to the reviewer or endorser.

The new Rules will go into effect December 1, 2009. The press release and link to the report can be found here http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/10/endortest.shtm . The effect on "mom bloggers" and "word of mouth agencies" will be played on during talk shows and on social networks because they are obligated to disclose their affiliation with the advertiser. Power of Play

On MSN today headline article states that "Students under pressure to perform at ever-younger ages. Studies revealed that in some Kindergarten classrooms that play materials such as blocks, sand & water tables and props for dramatic play "have largely disappeared". The report continues to state that most children had a half hour or less of play time and some schools have no play time at all. Comments from the report include, “There is absolutely no research showing that children who read at age 4 or 5 do better at age 10 or 12 than children who start reading in first grade,” she says. “But there is research showing if you push 4- and 5-year-olds too hard, it backfires.”

***Very interesting to note from the article was the fact that in Finland, where teens consistently score high academically, also attend play-based kindergarten and start first grade at age 7 rather than age 6.

Play is where kids learn through experience of positive and negative reactions. Both structured and un-structured play provides the grounds for moral, character and ethics development. To play children need safe toys that can provide for physical and emotional development. Toys that produce play are colorful, fun to use and safe. As parents, care providers and practitioners we are here to create the play environment that brings life lessons in order to facilitate those rare teachable moments.

Little Tikes recall

Little Tikes recalls children's Toy Workshop sets and trucks due to choking hazard. In cooperation with CPSC Little Tikes has recalled 1.6 million of these products that contain a small plastic toy nail that measures 3 1/4 inches long by 1 1/4 inches in diameter that poses the choking hazard. The plastic nail comes in two (2) colors Red or Blue.

The firm received One (1) report of an 11 month old boy who choked when the toy nail became forcefully lodged in his throat. The child was hospitalized but made a full recovery. The toy was sold in stores from 1994 through June 2009 and was manufactured in China and United States. Consumers should remove the Toy Nails immediately and contact Little Tikes for instructions on free replacement toy nails.

Okay, couple things struck me in this recall.
***note - glad to hear the child made a full recovery and no other incidents have been reported.

1. Plastic Toy Nails - we also have plastic screws, legos, numbers, letters and every other toy that has small pieces for our kids. I do not blame Little Tikes for making these plastic play nails because they are fun for the kids to play with and also provide fine motor skill learning.
***Bottom Line - Supervision and Observation. Know if your child is one that likes to place things in their mouth and remove objects from the play area that may (even if you think there is No way they would put this in their mouth, they will) cause a choking problem. All my kids were different and some we did not have to worry about but our little daughter is different. Everything goes in her mouth.

2. Free Replacement Nails - this may not be too comforting to parents with newborns that are just exploring their environments like this 11 month old. Also, what size and shape will these be would have been some key information to pass on when sending out a Press Release.

Completely false claims because almost every product you have in your house, at work or that transports you to and from places has parts that are made from other countries. Quality is dependant on the company that secures the manufacturer or the Importer that is purchasing the products to resale.

This is the main reason that we switched Manufacturers recently because the quality did not meet our standards. Similar ride on toys claim to be the original not an initiation or even say that the Skitter is an imitation of the Plasma Car (this is posted on Plasma Car site) which is completely FALSE. The Plasma Car and Skitter came from the exact same manufacturer until the quality issue. And now we are proud and stand behind our claim that our ride on toy has the Highest Quality of Production. Also to note, the majority of our replacement part orders are for customers that do not have a SkitterToy!

Booster seat recall from Target

Target is voluntarily recalling 43,000 Circo booster seats. According to the report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the booster seat restraint buckle can can open unexpectedly, allowing a child to fall from the chair and be injured. Target has received eight reports of the booster seat buckles opening unexpectedly, including three reports of bruises, according to CPSC.

The seats were sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide from December 2008 through June 2009 for about $13. Consumers should immediately stop using the booster seat and return it to the nearest Target store to receive a full refund. For more info, contact Target at 800-440-0680 or visit www.target.com.

Student Injuries in Gym class jump 150%

According to a report that will be published in the September edition of Pediatrics the study was based on hospital reports of phys ed injuries. Injuries reported were classified as heat stroke, cuts, bruises, broken bones and sprains. These injuries were attributed to running into equipment or having contact with structures or other persons. Interesting to note: boys had more broken bones and cuts while girls had strains and sprains.

Experts site the injuries are due to more to lack of Supervision than to lively physical ed programs. Attributing to this expert say is increased class size, decrease in school nurses and that some school districts do not require teachers to be certified to teach phys ed particularly at the Elementary level. Certified phys ed teachers know where to position themselves, the amount of space children need around them for safe activities and proper warm up exercises.

We at SkitterToys bring over 20 years expertise to play safety! You cannot have safe play without a safe environment. Before any activity, whether at home or away, ensure the area is first safe to play. What to look for:

Equipment has no broken or exposed pieces that may cause injury
Equipment is in good working condition.
Play area surface has no cracks, holes or un-even surfaces
Proper fencing and/or boundaries
Dangerous animals or vegetation

These are just some basic rules that we employ daily for our children and to all our SkitterToys kids and families. Nothing matters more than diligent Supervision.

400,000 cribs recalled after 8-month-old dies
Simplicity crib has defective drop-down side that can create a gap

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday that Simplicity Inc. is recalling about 400,000 cribs that put babies at risk of death by suffocation.
The commission said consumers should stop using the cribs immediately.
An eight-month-old baby in Houston, Texas, died when it got stuck between the mattress and a defective drop-down side of the crib.
Plastic hardware on the crib can break or deform, the commission said, causing the drop side to detach and creating a gap where babies can fall in. The commission reported another 25 instances of the drop-side detaching.
The maker of the crib, Reading, Pa.-based Simplicity Inc. appears "to no longer conduct day to day operations," the commission said in its statement about the recall.
The cribs were sold at department stores, children's stores and other retailers around the country from January 2005 to June 2009. They cost between $150 and $300. The commission said the cribs should be returned to the store where they were purchased.

Over the last six months you've read many reviews of useful and fun products, toys, clothing, and accessories. You've met some companies that are new to the market and have recognized some more familiar companies. Even though I get the opportunity to review amazing products, I would have to say the most rewarding thing I love about my job is the people that I meet behind the companies I work with. One of the companies that I've had the pleasure to work with in the past was Three Peas Company. The woman behind Three Peas Co. is an amazing mother, friend and colleague, and I am so happy that I get to work with Antoinette again while introducing you all to one of my favorite childrens toys of all time- The Skitter!Most of the products we receive are cute girly little things that Abbigaile just adores. Alex loves getting mail, and a goal of mine is to find more products that he would love to review. We were super surprised when we received our pettiskirt to review, we also got a HUGE box with a SKITTER in it for Alex! Oh. My. Gosh! He couldn't get it out of the box fast enough! From the minute it was out of the plastic, he was skittering down the driveway and street non-stop!A Skitter is a self-propelled, eco-friendly ride on toy. Because it's self propelled, it has helped my son with his balance, coordination and problem solving skills. Skitters are made with recycled plastics that are extremely durable and in bold, fun colors! The weight limit is very high (I need to double check it in the morning, but I think its 130lbs!), which means that even big kids can enjoy the Skitter, or that this is one toy that will grow with your child! This truly is a timeless toy, and a great investment for your children's happiness!We've had our Skitter for about three months now, and I can honestly say that this is the ONLY outdoor toy that my kids play with every time we're outside. And they fight over it too, because now Abbie learned how to ride it! They absolutely love it! Despite the fact that it's being used all the time, the Skitter still looks brand new! Their friends come over and want to play on it, because they think it's the coolest thing ever, and their parents and I reminisce about the old fashioned scooter cars that we used to play with in gym class. My kids could seriously play on this thing for hours and not get bored, unlike many other ride on or outside toys. Alex loves to see how far he can get after riding down the slope of our driveway before twisting and the fact that his muscles get stronger every time he uses it and Abbie loves to just scoot-and-go!I can genuinely say that this is by far the BEST toy we've ever received for our children, and I highly recommend this product to anyone who has children or grandchildren!

Hi friends of skitterToys... I appologize for the distance and passed time since my last entry. between being mom, wrapping up school year for our oldest, staying in the hospital with our youngest (more later) and having a casting call for Three Peas Co., we have been in a hurricane around here. With that said...

How aout calling attention to allergies. This is what started what looked like simple diaper rash, then hives all over her body, to our daughter having an anaphylaxis reaction, swelling to an unrecognizable state and spending time in the hospital.

I don't want to scare anyone but we still don't know after several tests what happened. All that we know is we have a bottle of prednisone, 2 epi - pens and faith.

I share this with you because in these wonderful Summer days, enjoy your children and if they have allergies, please be aware that it can quickly change if they get a rash to something more serious for allergenic children; so please monitor them.
